Lennox heat pump service in Houston typically runs $150 to $650 depending on the part that failed, and most repairs are completed same-day when we have the component on the truck. We stock the Lennox parts that fail most often in this climate: capacitors, contactors, defrost control boards, reversing valves, outdoor fan motors, and crankcase heaters. You’ll usually know something’s wrong before the system quits entirely. A heat pump that runs but won’t cool, makes a buzzing sound at the outdoor unit, or frosts over in July is telling you a specific part has reached the end of its run.
We’re an independent service provider, not a Lennox dealership, which means we repair what’s broken instead of steering you toward a system replacement. Marco Benitez, our owner, has spent the better part of two decades tracing heat pump failures to the actual culprit, not the part that’s easiest to sell. That matters in Houston, where summer heat loads punish outdoor units and a misdiagnosed $40 capacitor can turn into a $400 board replacement if the real issue isn’t caught.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
We service the full Lennox heat pump line, from the entry-level Merit series (ML14XP1, 13HPX) through the mid-tier Elite (XP14, XP16, XP20) and the high-efficiency Signature series (XP21, XP25, SL25XPV). Each series shares component families, but there’s a compatibility gotcha with Lennox defrost controls and reversing valves: a part from an XP14 will not necessarily drop into an XP25, even if the physical dimensions match. Lennox ties certain boards to specific firmware revisions, and installing the wrong revision causes the defrost cycle to run on the wrong interval or skip entirely.
When you call us, we’ll ask for the model and serial number from the data plate on the outdoor unit. That plate tells us the exact part family, refrigerant type (R-410A on most units from 2010 forward), and production year, which matters because Lennox changed compressor and coil specs mid-model-run on several series. For the outdoor fan motor, the part number printed on the motor body itself, usually a 5KCP39 or ECM-style designation, is the definitive reference.
OEM versus aftermarket: for capacitors, contactors, and fan motors, quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers like Mars, Packard, or Genteq often match or exceed the original spec at a lower price. For reversing valves, control boards, and thermostatic expansion valves, we use Lennox OEM parts almost exclusively. Those components are calibrated to Lennox’s refrigerant charge and control logic, and a generic substitute creates callbacks. We’ll tell you which is which before we install anything.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Outdoor unit runs, no cooling or heating. The compressor may be running without the reversing valve shifting, or the system is low on refrigerant. In Houston heat, a low charge forces the compressor to run hotter and longer, which shortens its life every week it goes unfixed.
- Unit buzzes or hums but won’t start. This is almost always a failed capacitor, the cylinder-shaped component that gives the compressor and fan motor their starting jolt. Lennox units run hard in Houston summers, and capacitors fail more often here than in milder climates.
- System ices over in summer. Frost on the outdoor coil in July means the defrost cycle is triggering when it shouldn’t, or airflow is restricted, or the charge is off. A stuck defrost sensor or failing defrost board on a Lennox unit will turn your heat pump into a block of ice within an hour.
- Heat pump blows cold air in heat mode. This points at the reversing valve, the part that swaps the refrigerant flow between cooling and heating. On Lennox units, a failing reversing valve solenoid often makes a chattering sound at the outdoor unit during the cycle switch.
- Knocking or grinding from the outdoor unit. The compressor’s internal mounts may have worn, or the fan motor bearings are failing. Catching the fan motor early, before the blade wobbles into the coil, means a $350 motor swap instead of a $1,200 coil and refrigerant job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most Lennox heat pump repairs in Houston fall between $150 and $650 installed, parts and labor included. A capacitor or contactor swap lands at the low end, usually $150 to $280. A defrost control board runs $250 to $450. An outdoor fan motor typically costs $320 to $550. A reversing valve replacement, which requires recovering and recharging the entire refrigerant circuit, starts around $600 and can run higher depending on the charge and access.
Every price is in writing before any work starts. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it applies to every call we run, no exceptions. The written estimate shows the part cost, the labor, and the total. If we find something else once we’re in the unit, we stop, show you, and get your sign-off before proceeding. The repair itself is guaranteed in writing for a full year. If it fails in that time, we come back at no charge. That’s not an upgrade, it’s the default.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a hard line here, and you need to know where it is. The capacitor inside a Lennox outdoor unit stores several hundred volts even with the power off. Touching the terminals wrong will put you on the ground, or worse. Contactors, capacitors, fan motors, defrost boards, and anything behind the service panel are not DIY territory. The safety risk is real, and the diagnostic risk is worse: swapping a capacitor that wasn’t the problem doesn’t fix the unit and leaves you holding the same failure a week later.
What you can safely do: check that the thermostat is set correctly, check the breakers at the panel, and confirm the outdoor unit isn’t buried in leaves or blocked. If you’ve got a dirty air filter, change it. That’s the full list. Anything beyond that, call us at (903) 494-7686 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician who will diagnose the actual fault and put the price in writing before the first tool comes out.
FAQs
In Houston’s climate, capacitors last 3 to 7 years, contactors 5 to 10, and fan motors 8 to 12. The compressor itself should go 12 to 15 years if the system was installed correctly and the charge has stayed right. Houston’s heat and humidity shorten every one of those numbers compared to a milder market. A unit running 2,500 cooling hours a year simply wears parts faster than one running 1,200. If your Lennox is over 10 years old and needs a compressor or reversing valve, we’ll walk you through the repair-versus-replace math honestly, including what a new heat pump installation in Houston costs ($3,500 to $7,500). Call (903) 494-7686 and we’ll give you straight numbers, not a sales pitch.
Rarely. Capacitors, contactors, defrost sensors, and fan motors are sealed components, and once they fail, rebuilding them costs more than new parts and doesn’t last. The exceptions are things like a corroded wire terminal or a loose connection, which we fix as part of the service call at no extra charge. For anything that’s actually failed, replacement is the honest repair. Call us at (903) 494-7686 and Marco will tell you what can be saved and what can’t.
Most common parts, like a capacitor, contactor, or defrost sensor, are swapped in under an hour once the technician is at your home. A fan motor takes 90 minutes to two hours. A reversing valve or compressor replacement takes four to six hours because the refrigerant has to be recovered, the part changed, the system vacuumed, and the charge weighed back in. We’ll give you a time window when you call, and we arrive inside that window. That’s part of The Garrison Code.
We stock the parts that fail most often in Houston: capacitors, contactors, defrost controls, crankcase heaters, and outdoor fan motors in the common Lennox sizes and voltages. Specialized components like reversing valves, compressor-specific contactors, or control boards for the XP25 and SL25XPV series may require a same-day parts run. We’ll tell you on the phone what we’re carrying and what needs to be ordered, so there’s no surprise when the tech arrives. We also stock equivalent parts for Carrier and Trane systems, since many Houston homes have mixed equipment.
