Goodman Mini-Split Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Goodman mini-split installation in Houston typically runs $3,800 to $7,200 for a single-zone system, including the condenser, wall-mounted air handler, line set, electrical, and full startup. We stock Goodman-compatible components and complete systems on our trucks, and we can usually schedule installation within three to five business days once we confirm your model and BTU load. Most Houston homeowners call us after the outdoor unit stops communicating with the indoor head: the system runs but won’t cool, throws a fault code, or the compressor short-cycles every few minutes. Marco Benitez and our crew have done enough Goodman installs across Houston to tell you the most common failure isn’t the compressor at all. It’s usually an undersized line set, a bad communication wire from a previous install, or a board that never got properly matched to the condenser.

Which Goodman Models This Applies To

Goodman’s mini-split lineup breaks into a few families, and parts are not universally interchangeable across them. The Goodman Comfort series (MSZ-GL style indoor heads paired with GSZ condensers) covers most 18,000 BTU and smaller wall-mounted setups. The higher-efficiency Goodman inverter models (18 SEER and up) use a different communication protocol, so a board from a standard Comfort unit will not talk to an inverter condenser. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see constantly in Houston attics and exterior walls: the model tag on the indoor head starts with a GSX or MSZ prefix, but the outdoor unit sticker is what actually drives board and wiring compatibility. Always match the outdoor model to the part, not the pretty head on the wall.

We’re an independent service company. We are not a Goodman dealer or distributor, but we install and service Goodman mini-splits every week. For Goodman equipment specifically, we recommend OEM boards and sensors over aftermarket equivalents. The aftermarket options for Goodman mini-splits are hit or miss: some generic DC inverter boards run fine, but the EEPROM programming on a true Goodman board is factory-flashed to your exact model and compressor rotary speed range. A generic board will often run the fan ironically enough but then drop compressor RPM at exactly the wrong time in Houston humidity. If you give us the outdoor model number, we verify the board part number before we ever open the unit.

Signs Your Goodman Mini-Split Installation Is Failing

  • Indoor head blinks a fault code, outdoor unit keeps running. This usually points to a communication loss on the S1/S2/S3 signal wires, not a refrigerant problem. The condenser never gets the speed signal from the indoor board, so it ramps up and shuts down off its own internal safeguard.
  • System cools for 15 minutes, then blows warm air and restarts. The compressor may be tripping on a thermal overload. In Houston’s summer heat, a dirty condenser coil or a failing inverter board causes the unit to derate itself until it cools down enough to try again.
  • One room gets cold, but a second indoor head on the same condenser barely blows cool. On multi-zone Goodman setups, a bad electronic expansion valve (EXV) in one head lets too much refrigerant stack in that coil, starving the other head. The condenser thinks it’s doing its job.
  • Outdoor unit is humming but the fan is not spinning when the system calls for cooling. Could be a failed condenser fan motor, but on Goodman inverters it is frequently the main board failing to ramp the fan PWM signal. A replacement board fixes the fan and compressor in one shot.
  • The line set is freezing at the outdoor service valve. That ice means low return gas temperature. We see this after a slow refrigerant leak or when a previous install used the factory-flared connections without checking torque, and the flare seat leaks a couple of ounces a year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full single-zone Goodman mini-split installation in Houston, plan on $3,800 to $5,600 for a 9,000 to 18,000 BTU system, and $5,000 to $7,200 for a 24,000 BTU or multi-zone condenser with two heads. If you already have a Goodman system and it needs a part rather than a full replacement, a board install usually runs $320 to $650 depending on the model, and a condenser fan motor swap typically runs $280 to $480 parts and labor. The labor on a mini-split board replacement is usually under an hour and a half once we have the correct part in hand. Every install includes a written line-item price before we start work, a written guarantee on the full install, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the install fails during that year, we return at no charge for the second visit.

Mini-split part pricing comes down to one number: the outdoor model stamped on the condenser data plate. That is what we match, not the indoor head. A Goodman GSZ180361 board is a different part than a GSX140241 board, and crossing those part numbers is where discount online parts sellers and some handymen get it wrong.

DIY or Call Us?

I will give you an honest split here, because homeowners in Houston get enough smoke from people who want a service call for any blinking light. You can safely do two checks on a Goodman mini-split: pull the indoor air filters and wash them, and verify the outdoor unit is not buried in leaves or mulch blocking the coil. After that, the work belongs to someone with gauge set certification and a proper 410A or R32 recovery machine. These systems run high-voltage DC from the inverter board to the compressor and 220V at the condenser. The capacitor in the outdoor unit holds enough charge to put a grown man on the ground even with the breaker off, and the refrigerant side is under 400 plus PSI on a Houston afternoon. If the system is showing a fault code or the outdoor fan is not spinning, call (903) 494-7686. We show up with the board and the meter and you are not buying a guess.

What Should Maintenance Cost in Houston?

A mini-split tune-up in Houston should run between $80 and $200. A full AC repair on a standard split system in the same market typically falls between $150 and $650, while a furnace repair tends to run $150 to $700. Those are the ranges we quote. The single best thing you can do for a Goodman mini-split in this climate is wash that condenser coil every spring before the first 95-degree week: a clean coil keeps head pressure down, and that is what kills boards and cooks compressors here.
