Rheem Heat Pump Service: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Rheem heat pump repair in Houston typically runs $150 – $650 installed, and we stock common Rheem-compatible parts on our trucks for same-day service in most cases. The price depends on which component failed, and we’ll give you that number in writing before any work starts. Most Houston homeowners call us when the system runs constantly but won’t hold temperature, or when the outdoor unit makes a sound like a garbage disposal full of silverware.

Heat pumps do double duty in Houston. They cool your house through August and heat it during those damp January cold snaps. That year-round workload means a Rheem heat pump here typically lasts 10 – 14 years before major components start failing, versus the 15 – 18 you might see in a milder climate. The compressor and the reversing valve are the two parts that take the hardest beating in our humidity and heat.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

We service the full Rheem heat pump lineup: the Classic Series (RP14), the mid-tier Prestige Series (RP15, RP16), and the high-efficiency RP17 and RP20 variable-speed units. If you have a Rheem packaged heat pump, those use the same core components, just in one cabinet. Your model number is on the data plate, usually on the back or side of the outdoor unit. It starts with “RP” for split systems or “RQP” for packaged units.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people hit: Rheem changed their compressor electrical specs between the RP14 and RP16 series. A compressor that bolted into a 2015 RP14 won’t necessarily be a drop-in for a 2021 RP16, even if both are 3-ton units. We match by model number and serial number before we order anything. For most repairs, we recommend Rheem OEM parts. For contactors, capacitors, and defrost sensors, quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Mars or Supco work fine and cost about 20 – 30% less. For anything in the refrigeration circuit (compressor, reversing valve, TXV), OEM only. That’s where the failure risk and the warranty exposure are too high to gamble.

We’re an independent HVAC contractor. We’re not affiliated with Rheem or its dealer network, but we’re factory-trained on Rheem equipment and stock parts specifically sized for their units.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit runs but no warm air indoors: Your reversing valve has likely stuck. This is the part that switches the system between cooling and heating mode. Houston humidity makes these fail faster than anywhere else we’ve worked, including the Energy Corridor where Marco sees this exact call at least twice a week in January.
  • System short-cycles (turns on and off every few minutes): A failing capacitor or a low refrigerant charge. The capacitor gives the compressor its starting jolt, and when it’s weak, the system shuts down to protect itself. If it’s refrigerant, that’s a leak, not just a recharge, and it needs to be found and fixed.
  • Hissing or bubbling noise from the outdoor unit: Refrigerant escaping or the expansion valve (TXV) failing. The TXV is the metering device that regulates refrigerant flow. When it fails, your system either starves or floods the coil, and efficiency tanks.
  • Outdoor unit iced up in summer or winter: Could be low refrigerant, a failed defrost control board, or a bad outdoor fan motor. The defrost board tells the system to briefly run in cooling mode to melt frost off the coil. If it’s dead, the coil turns into a block of ice and the system stops heating.
  • System runs but can’t reach set temperature: This is often a compressor that’s lost capacity, especially on units that have run 12+ summers in Houston’s heat. A compressor that’s still running but not pumping at full strength is the main reason older heat pumps struggle to keep a Houston house at 72° in August.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Rheem heat pump repairs actually cost in Houston based on the part:

  • Capacitor: $150 – $250 installed
  • Contactor: $150 – $250 installed
  • Defrost control board: $250 – $450 installed
  • Reversing valve: $450 – $650 installed
  • Compressor: $650+ installed, quoted case-by-case
  • TXV / expansion valve: $350 – $550 installed
  • Refrigerant leak repair and recharge: $300 – $600 depending on leak location and charge size

Every one of those prices is written down before we start. No surprises at the door, no “well, it turned out to be more.” The written price is part of The Garrison Standard, and it’s non-negotiable on every job we run in Houston. The repair itself is guaranteed in writing for a full year. If that same part fails again inside 365 days, we return and fix it at no charge. If the repair doesn’t hold, the second visit is free. We also carry a rolling written guarantee on every repair we perform.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling: confirm the thermostat is set correctly, check that the breakers are on, and replace the air filter if it’s clogged. A dirty filter will trip the high-pressure switch and shut down even a healthy heat pump. That checks out fine, and it’s a five-minute fix.

But anything involving the electrical panel, the capacitor (which holds a charge even with the power off), or the refrigerant circuit is not a homeowner repair. A capacitor can deliver a serious shock if handled wrong. Refrigerant work requires EPA certification and proper equipment in Texas. Opening the sealed refrigeration system yourself means you’ll likely end up paying more when we have to redo it correctly. Call (903) 494-7686 and we’ll send a uniformed, background-checked technician who will show up inside the stated window and put the price in writing before touching a screw.
