Carrier thermostat installation in Houston typically runs $220 to $540 installed, depending on the thermostat model you choose and your system’s wiring. We stock Carrier-compatible thermostats on our trucks, so most installations are completed same day in one visit. If your Carrier thermostat has gone blank, stopped responding to temperature changes, or drifts several degrees off the reading on a separate thermometer, you’re likely looking at a failed thermostat or a bad sensor.
Most homeowners find out their thermostat failed when the AC won’t kick on in July, or the heat won’t fire on a cold snap that Houston absolutely does get. The display might read 72 while the house sits at 80, or the system short-cycles and never reaches set temperature. Thermostats fail quietly: a dead sensor, a bad relay, or wiring that has worked since the house was built and finally let go. A failed thermostat can mimic a compressor problem, which is one more reason to get an honest diagnosis before spending money on the wrong part.
Which Carrier Models This Applies To
We install and program thermostats across the full Carrier lineup: Infinity, Performance, and Comfort series. The Infinity system control operates on Carrier’s proprietary communicating protocol, so it is not a drop-in swap for a generic thermostat. If you have an Infinity system, a non-communicating thermostat will not control the variable-speed blower or modulating compressor correctly, no matter how it is wired. Our techs verify the existing thermostat model, do a wiring count, and confirm system type before quoting a replacement.
Performance and Comfort series systems are more forgiving: they run on standard 24V control wiring, which opens the door to a range of OEM Carrier thermostats or quality aftermarket models like a Honeywell T series or an ecobee. We carry both OEM and aftermarket thermostats and will tell you the tradeoff in plain English: an OEM Carrier part matches the original spec exactly, while a smart aftermarket unit often gives you better app control and remote scheduling. One compatibility gotcha we run into weekly in Houston homes: older Carrier units from the early 2000s often have no common wire at the thermostat, which limits which smart models will power themselves. We check for that before recommending anything.

Signs Your Carrier Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- System won’t turn on at all. A blank screen or completely unresponsive thermostat usually means dead batteries, lost power, or a failed relay inside the thermostat itself. If batteries are fresh and the screen is still dark, the thermostat has failed.
- Temperature reading is off by several degrees. The thermostat reads 72 but the house feels like 78. That’s usually a failed temperature sensor. Newer Carrier models sometimes show an error code when this happens, but plenty just read wrong until you replace them.
- Short cycling: the system starts and stops every few minutes. This is often blamed on the thermostat, but more often it is a failing run capacitor or a heat anticipator set incorrectly. We diagnose before replacing, because a new thermostat won’t fix an electrical issue at the unit.
- System runs constantly and never satisfies. The thermostat calls for cooling and never stops calling. This can be a stuck relay or a thermostat that has lost calibration. It also wastes real money on Houston summer electric bills while it does it.
- Settings reset or change on their own. Time, schedule, or temperature targets randomly reset. That points to corrupted memory in the thermostat, and no amount of reprogramming will hold a fix. Replacement is the honest answer.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Carrier thermostat installation in Houston runs $220 to $540 installed, and the spread comes down to the thermostat itself. A solid non-programmable or basic programmable thermostat starts around $220 to $280 installed. A mid-range smart thermostat like an ecobee or a Honeywell T10 lands around $350 to $450 installed. Carrier OEM Infinity controls run $400 to $540 installed because the part is proprietary and the programming takes longer. The labor is the steady number across all of them: our thermostat installs take 45 to 90 minutes and include wiring verification, system test, and programming for your schedule.
Every quote is in writing before we touch the system, and it includes the thermostat, installation, wiring check, setup, and a full-year written guarantee on the work. If that install fails in 12 months, we return at no charge and make it right. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it is how Dalton Heating & Air Houston has handled calls for years.
DIY or Call Us?
Thermostat installation is not a high-voltage hazard like a condenser or a furnace control board, but there is 24V at the wiring terminals, and crossing the wrong two wires can pop a fuse on the control board. That turns a $220 install into a $400 board replacement. If your existing thermostat has four wires or fewer, or you see a Carrier Infinity control, do not guess. If your wiring is labeled and you already have a common wire, a handy homeowner with the new thermostat’s instructions can usually handle it. If the system does not work properly after a DIY swap, we will come and sort it out. Before you open the wall, though, Marco Benitez will tell you what he tells his own crew: read the labels before you pull a single wire, and kill power to the air handler first. If you are not comfortable at any step, call (903) 494-7686 and we will send a technician who does this every day. Tell me what the system is doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs, not what sells.
FAQs
Most thermostats run 10 to 15 years in Houston, but the heat and humidity here shorten that. Thermostats in unconditioned spaces or those wired with no common wire that run on battery power often fail sooner. If yours is over 12 years old and acting unreliable, replacement is the honest call.
Rarely. The most common repairable issue is a dead battery or a tripped float switch for the drain pan. We check those first because they are free to fix. A bad sensor, a failed relay, or corrupted memory is not worth the time and parts, and a new thermostat is less expensive than chasing a repair that won’t hold.
A standard Carrier thermostat installation in Houston takes 45 to 90 minutes, including the wiring check and system test. Most customers are back to their normal schedule the same visit, and our technicians leave the site clean and the old thermostat with you, or haul it off if you would rather not deal with it.
We stock Carrier OEM and quality aftermarket thermostats on our trucks. For Carrier Infinity communicating systems, we carry the correct OEM control. If the thermostat you want is not on the truck, we will have a written quote ready before we leave, and installation is scheduled for the soonest available slot.
