We service Goodman heat pumps across Houston, including the GSZ, GSX, and GPH series, and we stock the parts that fail most often on our trucks. Most Goodman heat pump repairs in Houston run $150 – $650 installed depending on the part, and we can typically get to you same-day when a system is down. Here’s the straight answer: if your Goodman heat pump is running but not heating or cooling, the problem is usually one of five parts we replace almost weekly in this market.
You usually find out when the system is doing one of three things. It’s running nonstop without changing the temperature in the house. Or the outdoor unit is making a sound it never made before: a rattle, a hum that turns into a click, or a hard metallic grind. Or the system trips the breaker and won’t stay on. Most Houston owners call us after the second hot night when the house won’t drop below 78. We get it. The heat pump was working fine last week, and now it isn’t.
Which Goodman Models This Applies To
Goodman heat pumps fall into a few main lines, and the part you need has to match the series, not just the brand. The GSZ14 and GSZ16 are the split-system heat pumps most common in Houston attics and side yards. The GSX series is the entry-level line, using single-stage compressors. The GPH and GPC are packaged units where the whole system sits outside. The part we install depends on which one you have.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: a Goodman defrost control board from a GSZ14 will not always run a GSX unit correctly, even though both plugs fit. Goodman changed board firmware across model years, and a mismatch can leave the outdoor coil icing in Houston’s humid winters. Always match the part number on the old component to the replacement, and check the unit’s serial number prefix. We stock OEM Goodman parts for the current product lines, and for compressors and fan motors we carry quality aftermarket equivalents that meet Goodman specifications at a lower installed price. The difference matters: OEM compressors ship from Goodman’s Houston distribution warehouse, while aftermarket reciprocating or scroll equivalents can go in same-day.
Dalton Heating & Air Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Goodman. That means we can choose the right part for your budget instead of defaulting to the most expensive option in the catalog.

Signs Your Goodman Heat Pump Service Is Failing
When a Goodman heat pump part fails, the symptom is usually specific. Here’s what Marco Benitez tells our techs to check first when an owner describes the problem:
- System runs constantly, no temperature change. This is typically low refrigerant from a slow leak at a flare fitting or in the indoor coil. The compressor is working, but the charge is too low to transfer heat. In Houston’s humidity, this shows up as a sweating air handler and a house that never reaches set point.
- Outdoor fan doesn’t spin, but you hear a hum. The capacitor has failed or the condenser fan motor has seized. Goodman uses dual-run capacitors on most split systems, and a failed cap will take the motor out over time if it isn’t replaced quickly.
- Unit trips the breaker within minutes of starting. This usually means the compressor is grounding out or drawing locked-rotor amps. It can also be a shorted crankcase heater or a failed run capacitor causing a hard start. The breaker protects the circuit; the root cause needs testing, not a reset.
- Ice forms on the outdoor coil in summer, or the unit runs in defrost for too long. The defrost control board or the defrost sensor has failed, and the coil can’t shed frost. Because Houston has real humidity, even in mild winters, the defrost cycle gets more use here than in dry climates. Parts wear faster.
- Grinding or rattling from the outdoor cabinet. This is usually the compressor’s internal mounts or a failing fan motor bearing. Goodman scroll compressors don’t fail quietly, and the sound tells you whether the problem is mechanical (replace soon) or electrical (replace now).

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Goodman heat pump repairs in Houston land between $150 and $650 for most part replacements, with the labor and materials broken out on the invoice before you sign. A dual-run capacitor swap runs $150 – $250 installed. A condenser fan motor replacement runs $325 – $550 installed depending on the motor spec and whether we need to pull the fan blade. A compressor replacement starts higher and depends on the model, the charge, and whether the unit is under Goodman’s parts warranty.
What drives the range is the part itself and the labor time to change it safely. A capacitor takes 45 minutes. A compressor takes a recovery machine, nitrogen purge, torque wrench, and a proper vacuum, which is hours of work. Every repair we do includes the written price before any work starts, a written guarantee on the repair, and a free return visit if the work fails within the guarantee period. That’s The Garrison Standard, applied to every Goodman call, same as our Carrier, Trane, and Lennox work.
DIY or Call Us?
Some checks are safe for any homeowner. You can set the thermostat below the room temperature and confirm the outdoor unit is getting the call to run. You can see if the breaker has tripped. You can clean leaves and debris off the outdoor coil and confirm the condensate line isn’t clogged. You can check the filter and make sure return registers aren’t blocked.
But a heat pump uses 230-volt line power and contains refrigerant under pressure. The capacitor holds a charge even with the disconnect pulled. The compressor terminals carry lethal voltage. If the breaker is tripping, the capacitor is swollen, or the coil is frozen, that’s a trained technician job, not a weekend project. FAQs
Capacitors last 3 – 5 years in Houston’s heat and humidity; compressor and fan motors typically last 8 – 12 years with regular service. Houston’s summer runtimes push heat pump components harder than almost any other climate, which is why we recommend checking capacitors and contactors at each annual tune-up. Call (903) 494-7686 to schedule a check before the summer workload hits.
No, modern heat pump components like capacitors, boards, and fan motors are sealed units, so repair means replacement. The only exception is refrigerant leaks, which can sometimes be located and sealed if they’re at an accessible fitting. We quote the honest path based on what we find, not what’s easier to sell.
A capacitor or contactor swap takes under an hour on site; a condenser fan motor runs 1 – 2 hours; a compressor overhaul takes most of a day and requires recovery, vacuum, and recharge. We give you the time window up front and hold to it, same as the arrival window on every call.
We stock the most common Goodman replacement parts, including capacitors, contactors, defrost boards, fan motors, and start components, on our Houston trucks for same-day service. For less common parts or compressor replacements, we source from Goodman’s regional distribution network and usually have the part within a day or two. Call (903) 494-7686 for a free estimate.
