Rheem Mini-Split Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Dalton Heating & Air Houston installs Rheem mini-split systems in Houston at a typical all-in price of $3,800 – $6,200 for a single-zone system, and $6,500 – $11,500 for multi-zone setups covering two to four rooms. We keep Rheem-specific line sets, mounting hardware, condensate pumps, and communication wire on our trucks, so most single-zone installations in the Houston area go from estimate to cooling in one day. The call usually starts the same way: the old system ran fine for years, then a compressor locked up, a board quit talking to the indoor unit, or the original installer used a line set that was too long for the flare fittings and it leaked slowly until the charge was gone.

If you already own a Rheem unit and need it installed, or if you want a Rheem system sized and matched to your Houston home, we do the whole job: load calculation, pad or wall bracket, electrical disconnect, line set, evacuation, and startup verification. You get the price in writing before any work begins, and the installation is covered by a written one-year guarantee. That’s The Garrison Standard, and we’ve held to it since 2003.

Key Takeaways

  • Single-zone Rheem mini-split installation in Houston: $3,800 – $6,200 before rebates
  • Multi-zone (2 – 4 heads): $6,500 – $11,500 depending on line-set runs and electrical work
  • We stock Rheem-compatible line sets, flares, condensate pumps, and mounting kits locally
  • Every installation gets written pricing, a real load calculation, and a one-year written guarantee

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

We install and service the Rheem Renaissance series (multi-zone capable, 9K – 24K BTU per head), the Rheem Classic series (single-zone, most common 12K and 18K wall-mounted units), and the floor/ceiling cassette variants that show up in Houston sunrooms and garage conversions. The model number tells you what you have: look for a tag on the right side of the outdoor unit with a string like RWHF121JDC, where the 12 means 12,000 BTU. The indoor head will have a matching number, like RHVH121JDC. If the indoor and outdoor unit numbers don’t match in capacity, that’s a red flag worth a service call, because a mismatched pair will short-cycle and eat compressors.

On parts, there’s an honest split. The compressor, inverter board, and expansion valve should be OEM Rheem or authorized equivalents. Line sets, flare nuts, drain tubing, and mounting brackets can be quality aftermarket as long as they meet the spec: R-410A-compatible line sets, proper flare angles on soft copper, and a condensate pump rated for Houston attic heat. We stock OEM Rheem boards and motors for the common Renaissance and Classic series, and our parts supplier in Houston gets the oddball cassette and ducted-air-handler components next morning if we don’t have it. Dalton Heating & Air Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, so we’re free to use the best part for your specific unit rather than whatever one brand happens to sell.

Signs Your Rheem Mini-Split Installation Is Failing

  • Indoor head runs but blows room-temperature air. This is usually low refrigerant from a slow flare leak or an outdoor unit that lost its charge through a pinhole in the coil. The compressor may still be running, but it’s working against nothing.
  • The outdoor unit vibrates loudly or the lines rattle. Loose flare fittings, missing vibration isolators, or a line set that got kinked during the original pull. We see this often on Houston installs where the condenser sits on a bracket against a brick wall, and expansion and contraction over three or four seasons works the fittings loose.
  • Water dripping inside from the head unit. A clogged drain line or a failed condensate pump. In Houston humidity, the drain line runs constantly, and any sag in the tubing lets algae build a dam.
  • Unit shuts down and flashes an error code on the indoor display. Most Rheem mini-splits flash a two-digit code for communication failure, high-pressure lockout, or a bad sensor. The code is the first thing we ask for when you call.
  • Breaker trips when the outdoor unit starts. A failing compressor start capacitor, a grounded compressor, or undersized wiring from the original install. This one is dangerous to reset repeatedly, because you’re masking the electrical fault and cooking the compressor windings.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Rheem mini-split installation in Houston runs $3,500 – $7,500 for a complete single-zone system, installed. That price covers the outdoor condenser, indoor head unit, line set, condensate drain, electrical whip and disconnect, pad or wall bracket, evacuation, and startup testing. If you already own the equipment and need only the install labor and materials, single-zone work typically lands between $1,200 and $2,600 depending on how far the line set has to run and whether we need to open walls or install a dedicated circuit. Multi-zone systems go higher because each additional head adds line-set cost, a branch box, and more evacuation time.

What makes the price move: the distance from the outdoor unit to the indoor head, whether the electrical panel has room for a new 20-amp circuit, and whether the wall is block or frame. We put the exact number in writing before we touch anything, and every install includes the one-year written guarantee. If anything fails in that year because of our work, we come back at no charge. No re-quote, no trip fee.

DIY or Call Us?

If your Rheem mini-split stopped working, you can safely check three things: make sure the outdoor breaker is on, the remote has fresh batteries, and the filter is not packed with Houston pollen. That’s where sensible DIY ends. Flare fittings require a torque wrench and the right flare angle; too loose and it leaks, too tight and you crack the copper. The refrigerant circuit runs at 400+ PSI on a hot day, and releasing it is both dangerous and a fineable violation. And the electrical side is 240 volts at the disconnect. If you have to ask which wire is which, it’s already a job for trained hands.
