Get your free estimateRheem Thermostat Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Rheem thermostat installation in Houston typically runs $180 – $420 installed, depending on the thermostat model and your system’s wiring, and we stock Rheem-compatible thermostats on our trucks for same-day replacement in most cases. That price includes the thermostat itself, removal of the old unit, wiring verification, programming, and a written guarantee on the labor for a full year. Most Houston homeowners discover the problem the same way: the screen goes blank, the system won’t respond to temperature changes, or the AC short-cycles in July and the house never reaches set point.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rheem, but our technicians are factory-trained on Rheem equipment. We carry both OEM Rheem thermostats and quality aftermarket options that match Rheem wiring configurations. If you’re staring at a dead thermostat right now, call (903) 494-7686 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a thermostat issue or something deeper in the system.
Which Rheem Models This Applies To
Rheem has used several thermostat platforms over the years, and the wiring matters more than the brand name on the faceplate. If you have a Rheem system installed in the last 10 to 15 years, you’re likely working with either a standard 24-volt thermostat (Rheem’s EcoNet and classic non-communicating models) or, on newer high-efficiency systems, a communicating thermostat that uses a four-wire digital protocol instead of conventional terminals.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston owners hit: a communicating Rheem thermostat cannot be swapped for a generic smart thermostat without a wiring adapter or an equipment interface module. The communicating stat talks to the air handler and condenser over a digital signal. A standard Nest or Honeywell won’t understand it. If your Rheem thermostat has a model number starting with RETST (like RETST600SYS or RETST700SYS), it’s communicating, and you’ll want a direct Rheem replacement or a compatible EcoNet stat. If your stat has conventional terminals labeled R, C, Y, W, G, and O/B, any quality 24-volt thermostat will work, including the Rheem-branded conventional stats we keep on the truck.
OEM versus aftermarket: Rheem’s OEM thermostats carry a 5-year warranty when installed by a licensed contractor. Popular aftermarket options like Honeywell’s T6 Pro or T9 carry their own 5-year warranties and often add Wi-Fi or app control at a lower price than Rheem’s EcoNet line. For communicating systems, stick with Rheem EcoNet or the exact OEM replacement. For conventional systems, either path works, and we’ll show you the price difference before any work starts.

Signs Your Rheem Thermostat Installation Is Failing
- Blank display that doesn’t respond to new batteries. This usually points to a failed power circuit in the thermostat or, less commonly dropped C wire power from the air handler. On many Rheem conventional stats, the display should read ambient temperature even with the system off.
- System runs constantly but the house never cools to set point. A dying thermostat can misread indoor temperature by 5 to 10 degrees. The temp sensor drifts as the unit ages, and the system keeps running because the stat thinks it’s warmer than it actually is. In Houston’s August heat, an AC that never satisfies is often a thermostat lying to the compressor.
- Short cycling. The system kicks on, runs three or four minutes, then shuts off and repeats. A failing thermostat relay or temperature sensor can cause this, though a dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant will do the same. We check the stat first because it’s the fastest rule-out.
- Temperature reading jumps around. If your thermostat says 74, then 81, then 70, and nobody touched it, the sensor has drifted. This is common after 8-plus years in Texas heat, especially on stats mounted on walls that catch direct afternoon sun through a window.
- Buttons or touchscreen don’t respond consistently. On Rheem’s touchscreen EcoNet models, a failing digitizer or moisture ingress from Houston’s humidity can cause ghost presses or unresponsive zones. If you’re pressing harder than you should be, the stat is on borrowed time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, plan on $180 – $420 installed for a Rheem thermostat replacement. A standard Rheem conventional thermostat runs $80 – $120 for the part, while a Wi-Fi-enabled or EcoNet communicating stat runs $150 – $280. Labor for a straight swap, where the wiring is intact and the mounting plate matches, runs $100 – $140. If we’re running new thermostat wire or adding a C wire because your existing cable lacks one, that pushes the total toward the upper end of the range.
Every quote is in writing before we touch the wall. No exceptions. That written price includes the thermostat, removal of the old unit, wiring verification, system testing in both heating and cooling modes, programming walkthrough, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise on the labor. If the installation fails within a year, we return at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Thermostats run on 24-volt control power, which is low voltage and generally safe to handle. A homeowner with patience can swap a conventional thermostat in 30 minutes if the wiring matches and the mounting plate lines up. But three things go wrong in Houston specifically. First, many homes have no C wire, and Wi-Fi thermostats won’t run without one. Second, miswiring a heat pump thermostat is easy, and a wrong O/B setting means your system heats when it should cool, which you’ll notice quickly in a Houston September. Third, communicating Rheem systems are not DIY-friendly at all. If you’re not sure which type you have, call us.
Marco Benitez will tell you straight: “Tell me what the system is doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs, not what sells.” If the thermostat is showing symptoms that could also be a control board or transformer problem, we’ll diagnose before we recommend a replacement. Call (903) 494-7686 and a real person answers, 24/7.
FAQs
A Rheem thermostat typically lasts 8 to 12 years in Houston, though thermostats mounted on sun-exposed walls or in rooms with high humidity can fail earlier. The internal temperature sensor drifts over time, and touchscreen models degrade faster in humid environments. If your stat is past the 10-year mark and showing symptoms, replacement is the smarter spend than repair.
Most thermostat failures are not economically repairable. A failed display, unresponsive touchscreen, or dead temperature sensor requires board-level replacement that costs as much as a new thermostat. The one exception is a loose wire or a tripped condensate float switch, which can mimic thermostat failure. We check those before recommending replacement, which is why a diagnosis call is worth it. Call (903) 494-7686 for an honest assessment.
A straightforward Rheem thermostat swap takes 30 to 60 minutes on site, including system testing in both modes. If we need to run new wiring, pull a C wire, or configure a communicating EcoNet system, plan on up to 2 hours. We’ll tell you before we start and the price doesn’t change mid-job.
We stock Rheem conventional thermostats, Rheem EcoNet communicating thermostats, and quality aftermarket options from Honeywell on our trucks, along with the wiring and mounting hardware for most Rheem configurations. If your system needs a specific OEM model we don’t have on board, we can typically source it within one business day in the Houston metro and schedule the install immediately after.
